🟤 BRB Homestead Chicken Series — Day 2
Starting From Scratch: Inside the Incubator
Welcome to Day 2 of my chicken series on BRB Homestead, where I’m documenting the full journey of building a backyard flock—from egg to hatch to pasture.
Instead of buying chicks, I’m starting from scratch.
That means one thing: we’re hatching our own flock.
Right now I’m working with Golden Cuckoo Marans—a beautiful, hard-to-find breed that isn’t always available locally.
🥚 Why I’m Starting With Eggs (Not Chicks)
- Hard-to-find breeds like Golden Cuckoo Marans
- Hatcheries often sell out or require large orders
- Hatching eggs are easier to source
- Full control over flock development
It takes more patience—but builds a better flock long-term.
🌡️ 🐣 Incubation Conditions
- Temperature: 99.5°F (forced air incubator)
- Humidity Days 1–18: 45–55%
- Lockdown (Days 18–21): 65–70%
💡 Homestead Tip: Humidity Hack
If your house is too dry, try this:
👉 Place your incubator in a basement or laundry room.
Basements naturally hold humidity, and laundry rooms add moisture from washing cycles—making humidity control much easier.
🐣 What’s Happening Inside the Egg (Day 2)
- Embryo development has started
- Circulatory system is forming
- Early structures are developing rapidly
- Extremely sensitive stage
🌱 Raising Chickens on Fresh Grass
- Healthier birds
- Better foraging behavior
- More natural environment
- Stronger flock development
🛠️ My Incubator Setup
Amazon Egg Incubator (BRB Homestead Setup)
- Stable temperature control
- Humidity support
- Automatic egg turning
📅 What’s Coming Next
- Egg candling updates
- Embryo development tracking
- Humidity + temperature adjustments
- Hatch day 🐣
🔥 Final Thoughts
This isn’t about rushing chickens—it’s about building a flock with intention and documenting every stage most people never see.
